Koilonychia Treatment and Prevention tips to get rid of it

Koilonychia is the abnormal thinness and concavity of fingernails occurring especially in hypochromic anemias. It is nothing but dystrophy of the fingernails in which they are flattened and have concavities with raised edges, the concave upper surface of the nail plate making it look like a spoon and that's why it is also called spoon shaped nails.
Once Koilonychia occurs, it takes long time to recover to normal.

Koilonychia is a common deformity in which the nail plate, which normally has a convex contour, is replaced by a concave contour. Koilonychia may be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait or it may be associated with other syndromes. Koilonychia is a well-recognized clinical sign of iron deficiency occurring either with or without anemia. The possible causes of the nail disorder are discussed below:
Koilonychia is mainly occurs mainly as a result of thinning and softening of the nail plate.
This condition may be caused by direct trauma e.g. due to use of vibrating tools.
Constant, long time exposure of the hands to petroleum-based solvents.
Injury to the nail bed may produce a permanent deformity.
Malnutrition may also lead to koilonychia.
Constant and frequent exposure of nails to nail polish can produce brittle nails with peeling of the edge of the nail.
Other Causes of Koilonychia may be anaemia, hyperthyroidism, glossitis, pica, illness, cheilosis, chemotherapy.
Treatment and Prevention Steps that must be taken against Koilonychia:
First of all you must remember that koilonychia must be treated as soon as one sees it developing.
You must wear gloves while washing dishes or exposing your hands to alkalies or some other harsh chemicals. This will help to prevent koilonychia.
Wear shoes that don't squeeze the toes together.
Since Koilonychia is caused due to malnutrition, therefore it is very important to take care of your nutrition habits and diets. As it occurs mainly due to iron deficiency, so you must eat food containing more iron content in them.
