Laser Treatment for Acne
Acne is an inflammatory skin disease. Medical community has been researching for years to find the foolproof treatment for acne and related skin conditions. The most common problem associated with acne is scarring. Laser treatment has been normally used in anti-ageing treatments. Now it has begun to be used on for treatment of scars left by acne. Acne scar laser treatment stands out among all acne treatments in effectiveness. Acne scarring is categorized under cosmetic disfigurements resulting in psychological and low self-esteem problems to the patients. Due to advancements in laser technique, it is notable here that most of these can very well be corrected using laser as skin resurfacing modality.

In the process lasers of various wavelengths and intensity, depending on severity of the acne, are used to recontour scar tissues and reduce redness around skin lesions. It is now possible to remove tissues with laser. Laser is also effective in reducing excessive oil from the skin and later treat clogged pores through exfoliation and cleansing. It is effective but is also an expensive treatment and requires long period. There are four types of laser treatments that are in vogue for acne and related areas. They are Smoothbeam laser treatment, Fraxel laser treatment, Vbeam laser and IPL treatment.
Smoothbeam treatment centers on growth of collagen and tries to treat acne beneath the surface of the skin in the body. It is administered after using the topical local anesthetic. It is advisable to apply sunscreen with SPF30 after this treatment to avoid tanning. Fraxel laser treatment is first Non-Ablative Resurfacing laser and is used for severe acne. Vbeam laser and IPL treatment are used to treat acne from the surface of skin. Laser is being successfully used for active acne treatment and acne scarring on the face and back. The laser light works by specifically targeting and heating the collagen and sebaceous glands in the dermis while protecting the epidermis. It also has a cooling device that cools and protects the skin's surface. The treatment promotes the growth of new skin cells and when the treated area heals the scars are far less visible than before.

The new innovative laser treatment can be easily applied in all patients across all age groups. It can be successfully used on all skin types. It is important to note that the laser treatment can be continued along with ongoing medical acne treatment. It is also used by patient whose acne has resolved but they still have scarring.

Laser technology is safe and painless to be used as shown by the results. But it has some side effects like hypopigmentation ( lightening of the skin in the treated area ) and hyperpigmentation (darker skin in the treated area) and redness around treated areas that may last for few days to few months. In rare cases the laser technique is not very effective and the results may vary from person to person. Often it is used in conjugation with other cosmetic procedures to get the best results. It becomes necessary for patients to regularly apply sunblock after the treatment and best results may be visible only after 10 or 12 months of the treatment.

Laser shows great potential to qualify as a good method for acne scar treatment and with passage of time it will become less cumbersome and expansive.
